MLM business-suspended disbelief!
62MLM's sell hope
For the most part MLM's thrive on failure! They prey on people that are having financial difficulties and this is why you are hearing so many MLM pitches right now.
People get so upset when you tell them that there MLM is a joke. I've heard people adamantly defend these companies that have yet to pay them a dime.
It’s a term called "suspended disbelief" and we have all done it.
This is how it works; have you seen the movie Armageddon? With Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton and Steve Busccemi in it? It's about NASA sending a group of oil well drillers into outer space to drill a hole in an asteroid on a collision course with earth. It is one of my favorite movies, very entertaining and I highly recommend it.
Try to sit through the entire movie saying to yourself “that could never happen” or “That is impossible” and you will find it difficult to enjoy the movie. Even worse is to have someone sitting behind you and say that stuff all during the movie. You know what they're saying is true but you have "suspended your disbelief". The truth is not what you want to hear right now. you're not stupid you just want to enjoy the movie. Feel better for a little while, eat some popcorn with a friend. It might even anger you if somebody neg head downers all over you're movie. You have made an effort to suspended your disbelief and you refuse to let an idiot ruin it. The whole theater agrees and a jihad is created and the trouble maker is removed by the usher.
When you pitch your MLM to your friends and not only do they not want to buy but they give you that look like you are high or something. This is because you have suspended your disbelief and they still live in reality.
It is my personal opinion most people sign up with MLM’s just to feel better about their situation for a little while. It's a lot easier to sleep at night if you suspend your disbelief and take a big swallow of the cool-aid provided by the MLM. No matter what the MLM is pitching weight loss, video phones or travel the product is always the same. They are selling you “Hope”.
A typical MLM charges $500 to sign up. You get a membership in the company, a replicated website and some back office bullshit. At this point they win. It does not matter if you succeed or fail. 99% of people in MLM's fail in this stage or the first month. Like I said before these companies thrive on failure. Let's say you get $250 for every person you sign up. You are going to be hell bent to sign 3 other people up to get back your money and make some money. Let’s say you are one of the "lucky ones" that actually does that.
The MLM has now made $2000 and you have made $250. Let’s take it one step further and say your 3 friends talked 3 people into signing up. Now the MLM has made $8000 and paid out $1000. At this point you are most likely out of friends, pissed and you quit. Thanks, nice knowing you, have a great day... they thrive on failure?
This is called a pyramid scheme and the people at the top of them get rich. This is how they can afford late night TV commercials and conference rooms at hotels.
You can see how "suspended disbelief" could work on an individual having financial and personal problems. Another powerful tools these companies use is the (Us vs.Them) tactic. This is where the company gives you the warm fuzzy feeling that you are one of the lucky ones to be privileged enough to be with them. They do this by surrounding you with other members and keeping you on the cool-aid. Fear of loss, us and them, denial and suspended disbelief.
In some cases cults or religion run around in "suspended disbelief". Most of time once the movie or sermon is people return to reality. If you really believe that Bruce Willis stayed behind and pushed the button to save us all from the meteor than you are past suspended disbelief and just stupid.
The weird stuff happens when the majority of a population is in a temporary state of suspended disbelief. It happened in ancient Rome, Nazi Germany, Africa, Asia and many other places and times. I say temporary because that state has always comes to an end.
Think its not possible? Think about everything you know to be true about the world. Then think about how much of it you heard second hand or on the news. If you believed it, you naturally assume other smart people will believe it too. Let's say they all do but the information is false. Let's say the information is easier to believe than not. Now the majority of the intelligent population is living in a happy state of suspended disbelief. The last thing they want is the truth mucking everything up.
What happened to these civilizations is the same thing that happens to an MLM. Since they are built on lies and thrived on failure, that's exactly what they do. In case after case of mass suspended disbelief it was always the leaders of the organization that try to keep the population from growing intellectually and spiritually, in fear that they will lose control.
